Reusability and modularity in transactional workflows
1997
Abstract Workflow management techniques have become an intensive area of research in information systems. In large scale workflow systems modularity and reusability of existing task structures with context dependent (parameterized) task execution are essential components of a successful application. In this paper we study the issues related to management of modular transactional workflows, i.e., workflows that reuse component tasks and thus avoid redundancy in design. The notion of parameterized transactional properties of workflow tasks is introduced and analyzed, and the underlying architectural issues are discussed.
Entrepreneurship, innovation and regional performance: application for the Spanish regions
2016
AbstractThe aim of this study is to test the importance of entrepreneurship or new business formation for explaining differences in economic performance in the Spanish regions, together with the role played by the endowments of innovation capital and the socio-economic capabilities of every region. The results show that the effect of new business formation on economic performance varies considerably between regions, and the type of start-up is highly important for the results obtained: entrepreneur endowments of high technology intensive sectors and medium technology intensive sectors, but not those of low technology intensive sectors, have a positive effect on regional performance. Also, t…
Gold nanoparticles stabilized by modified halloysite nanotubes for catalytic applications
2019
A highly sustainable prototype of a flow system based on gold nanoparticles (4.2 nm) supported on thiol-functionalized halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) was developed for catalytic applications. The catalytic performances were evaluated using the reduction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol as a model system. Under the best experimental conditions (0.0001 mol%, 1.97 × 10−8 mg of Au nanoparticles), an impressive apparent turnover frequency value up to 2 204 530 h−1 was achieved and the halloysite-based catalyst showed full recyclability even after ten cycles. The high catalytic activity confirms the importance of the use of HNTs as support for Au nanoparticles that can exert a synergistic effect bo…
An Intelligent System for Building Bioinformatics Workflows
2012
In this paper a new intelligent system designed to support the researcher in the development of a workflow for bio informatics experiments is presented. The proposed system is capable to suggest one or more strategies in order to resolve the selected problem and to support the user in the assembly of a workflow for complex experiments, using a a Knowledge base, representing the expertise about the application domain, and a Rule-Based system for decision-making activity. Moreover, the system can represent this workflow at different abstraction layers, freeing the user from implementation details and assisting him in the correct configuration of the algorithms. A sample workflow for protein c…
Knowledge organization for modelling workflows in Taverna environment
2014
Today Workflow Management Systems (WFMS), like Taverna and Kepler, have a very important place in the everyday work of the scientist. These tools support the access to computational resources and act as interface for building complex data processing chains. The next step is to support decisions of the researcher on autonomously developing workflow parts guided by requirements of the scientist while she/he is working on the high-level goal of the experiment. To this aim, it is necessary an ontology to store the knowledge related to the experiments and tools used, and to make this knowledge available not only to the scientist, but also to a suitable artificial intelligent system. In this pape…
